Reasons to Stay.

A community project transformed into a scalable, accessible digital platform.

Reasons to Stay began with a deeply human idea: give people somewhere to share the moments, people and reasons that helped them keep going. As the community grew, the original website could no longer carry the scale, responsibility and accessibility needs that came with thousands of personal submissions.Inkfire rebuilt it as a custom WordPress platform with structured moderation, accessible reading, scalable architecture and tools designed to help a small team safely support a growing global community.

The challenge

A hopeful idea had outgrown the website carrying it.

Reasons to Stay gives people somewhere to share the moments, people and reasons that helped them keep going. As the community grew, the original site could no longer carry the scale, responsibility or accessibility needs that came with thousands of deeply personal submissions.

Inkfire approached the rebuild as a custom WordPress platform development project rather than a visual redesign. The goal was to protect the warmth of the project while engineering the systems needed to moderate sensitive content, support future growth and keep the experience accessible.

01

Scale responsibly

A growing library needed architecture capable of handling significantly more letters without slowing the experience down.

02

Protect submissions

Emotionally sensitive material needed a structured path from submission to human review before publication.

03

Keep it supportive

Every interaction had to preserve the calm, human feeling that makes the project valuable to readers.

04

Build access in

Keyboard, screen-reader, readability and motion needs had to be part of the foundation, not a retrofit.

Visual language

Digital infrastructure without losing the feeling of a handwritten letter.

The live identity deliberately feels human and imperfect. Inkfire carried its cream paper, dark ink and orange highlights into a clearer digital system, then paired that emotional layer with accessible interface typography for longer reading and controls.

Platform engineering

The real rebuild lives behind every letter.

At the centre of the platform is the Letter Engine, a structured workflow that prevents incoming community content from simply appearing online. Each submission has a clear state, purpose and moderation path.

Published Pool

One trusted source for public content

Approved letters feed random discovery, embedded widgets and newsletter content from a controlled published pool rather than disconnected copies.

Designed for growth

Database work that users never need to notice

Optimised queries, structured content states and deliberate loading keep browsing responsive as the library and audience expand.

Reasons to Stay platform interface and moderation system

Responsible moderation

Safety needed a workflow, not a disclaimer.

Because the platform handles deeply personal writing, moderation is operational infrastructure. Inkfire built a specialised internal moderation model that analyses patterns around safety, tone and content quality before directing letters into the appropriate review queue.

Human moderators remain central. Their decisions inform the system over time, while priority queues, bulk actions, rescanning tools and queue-health dashboards help a small team manage a large volume responsibly.

Automated triageIncoming submissions are analysed and prioritised before public release.
Human reviewPending and quarantined letters are surfaced clearly for moderator decisions.
Learning from outcomesReviewed decisions help improve the platform’s own specialised model.
Operational toolingBulk moderation, stage actions and queue dashboards keep the workload manageable.

Beyond the website

Hope designed to travel.

The Reasons to Stay Letter Widget lets blogs, community websites and partner organisations place a moderated letter directly on their own pages. Each embed draws safely from the published pool and links people back to the wider project.

It turned the platform from a destination into a distribution system, giving the project a simple way to place supportive content where people already spend time online.

Accessibility + performance

Built to stay usable as the community grows.

Accessibility is part of the codebase itself. The additional Sonny × Inkfire tools enhance an already accessible structure rather than trying to repair inaccessible markup after launch.

WCAG 2.2 AASemantic structure, contrast and accessible interaction patterns guide the platform.

The impact

A platform ready to carry more voices, safely.

Reasons to Stay has grown far beyond a proof-of-concept website. The rebuilt platform now supports a substantial community, a structured moderation operation and millions of letter deliveries while keeping the experience focused on a single human moment: reading something that helps.

“Working with Inkfire has been transformational for Reasons to Stay. They didn’t just redesign the site – they built an entire platform that allows the project to grow safely and sustainably. Their understanding of accessibility, community storytelling, and scalable technology has given us a foundation that simply didn’t exist before.”

Reasons to Stay website experience

Built for meaningful growth

Technology strong enough to disappear behind the stories.

The most important thing about the platform is that readers never need to think about the moderation engine, data architecture or accessibility systems underneath it. They can simply find a letter, read it and feel a little less alone.
